“Aaawwwwww. I’m Tellin’!”

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

When I was eight, these words struck fear in my heart. It didn’t matter how small the infraction I committed was (or if there even was an infraction to begin with), I would beg the other kid to not ‘tell’ whoever it was that they were planning to tell. It may have been their kindly grandmother that they planned on telling, but in my mind it was always some 7-foot troll who would have undoubtedly come outside and chewed me to bits.

It took a while, but slowly I realized that tellin‘ and getting in trouble were two, very different things. This is a lesson that we in the MRI community would do well to learn regarding accidents.

Why It’s Important To Find Metal Before MRI

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

A few weeks ago I posted my layperson’s summary of why there’s even an issue with metal and MRI (click here to read that post on MRI and Metal). In this posting, I hope to explain why it’s so critical to find metals, particularly ferromagnetic metals, being carried by people or inside objects.

MRI Technologist Sues For MRI Safety

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

Nearly all MRI accidents that wind up the subject of civil lawsuits conclude the same way… in confidential settlement protected by a non-disclosure agreement (NDA). This makes it extremely difficult to get to the facts associated with any particular accident. Currently the highest profile MRI accident (the death of a young boy from a flying oxygen cylinder) is in pre-trial litigation and is our best window into the legal responsibility of Technologists and providers. Today, however, I learned of another suit in which a Tech is suing her former employer for willfully putting off needed system repairs that compromised image quality and diagnostic value.

Inevitability -> Death & Taxes

Monday, April 13th, 2009

As I struggle through the last bit of my annual tax returns, I’m struck by the euphemistic reference to inevitability, “only two things are certain, death and taxes.” At this very moment, I’m not sure that the two are that different (that is, if death is to be long and arduous). But I think we often make the assumption that everything we wish to avoid is somehow inevitable. Mom made us eat our spinach. Uncle Sam requires us to decipher byzantine rules. But we don’t have to accept MRI accidents as requisite and inevitable parts of providing MRI services.

MRI Accidents And Unprotected Sex

Friday, March 13th, 2009

“Hey! You got your chocolate in my peanut butter…”

I mean really, what could MRI accidents have to do with unprotected sex? Well, apart from the MR coital anatomic imaging (honestly, I couldn’t make this up), I mean this as an allegory…

MRI Accidents Jump 30% in 2008!

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

Well, hopefully accidents didn’t jump a full 30%, but the number of reports to the FDA of MRI accidents did! This makes four consecutive years in which the numbers of MRI accident reports have climbed, increasing a whopping 270% above the 2004 rates!

Do We Celebrate This Record Year?

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

Yes, though we’ve got more than a full month’s worth of reports yet due, it turns out that 2008 is a record year for MRI safety!

No, I’m not talking about the year of record sales of ferromagnetic detection systems or the publication of no less than three MRI safety best practice guidance papers… What I’m talking about is the numbers of MRI accident reports to the FDA.

Countdown To Colombini – Under 100 Days.

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

Indeed. Nearly 8 years later, the civil lawsuit trial surrounding the infamous death of a 6-year old boy is scheduled to begin in March of 2009.

The multi-million dollar lawsuit has been grinding through the legal system as a myriad of claims and counter-claims have been ricocheting around among the parties. Those who’ve been watching the pre-trial activities may attest to it sometimes resembling a soap-opera with shifting alliances, but it appears that the parties’ day in court will come in less than 100 days.

MRI Truth Is Sometimes Stranger Than MRI Fiction

Friday, December 12th, 2008

I have a serial weakness for medical dramas. I get sucked-in and watch for a couple of seasons before the absurdity catches up with me. With respect to MRI, it seems that 99% of the time the shows are so wildly off-base that it seems that each must outdo its own crazy scenarios (and those of the other medical dramas) to come up with a new MRI-related plot gimmick.

But then, typically after I’ve lost all hope of seeing anything that approaches reality, something plausible and even downright real is shown on one of these programs…

The Most Infamous MRI Accident: Colombini At Westchester

Friday, July 11th, 2008

The single accident that really galvanized the very existence of the MRI safety movement was an accident that occurred in 2001 at Westchester Medical Center in New York State. In that tragedy, a steel oxygen cylinder was brought into the MRI room while Michael Colombini, a six-year old boy, was receiving a post-operative MRI to confirm they doctors had successfully removed his brain tumor.
